Hats for Heroes was started in October 2010 when I had an idea to add a knitted hat to supplement the morale boosting boxes that I was already sending out to Afghanistan. The weather in Afghanistan can be very extreme, from baking hot to freezing so these hats would be a little bit of comfort for our troops. The single hat in a box soon expanded to supplying boxes full of hats – all accompanied by a Mars Bar, Snickers or Kit Kat Chunky.

Word soon spread and I now have knitters from all corners of the UK and beyond sending me hats. It has been an overwhelming success – I started out with an initial aim of sending out 500 hats but by January 2012 we had sent out over 5000 hats.

It has been brought to my attention that the government has announced that it is reducing troop numbers in Afghanistan by at least half later this year (2013)  This means that I have collected nearly enough hats to cover all the heads for Winter 2013/2014 so we no longer require any more hats at this point in time.

If you have any hats that you have already knitted or collected, please feel free to send them to me and I will make sure that they are sent to the remaining servicemen and women in Afghanistan.

Please keep checking the website as I may be asking people to pick up their needles once more if I run out of hats4heroes!

We aim to send out the knitted hats during September and October each year until the heroes return.
