KNITTED HATS FOR HEROES                                            Download PDF

The hats will be worn when the troops are off duty so do not have to be in specific colours and at the moment we are knitting them mainly in rib so they can stretch to fit any size head but any type of knitted hat would be appreciated.
The hats can be knitted in any wool and virtually any colour but please use discretion in the choice of colours e.g. no white or fluorescents for safety reasons.
I have included a selection of different patterns but if you have a favourite pattern you wish to use then please do that – there are no hard and fast rules

Rene Tourle (pictured) and her friend Gladys Dale have very kindly sent me a copy of a new pattern that they designed together. They have arthritic hands and found this pattern was easier than doing rib and it is a simple but very effective rib type hat.

Using DK wool and 4mm needles (old size 8) cast on 55 stitches
4 rows stocking stitch (one row plain, one row purl)
4 rows reverse stocking stitch
Repeat these 8 rows 19 times

Sew side seam and gather top.
